Writing doesn’t have to be a lonely pursuit.

Are you a Melbournian speculative fiction writer looking to take the next step in your writing journey?

We’re always on the lookout for new writing talent to bring into the fold. We are interested in any fiction that the author considers ‘speculative’. We love pulpy fantasy, hard science fiction, cosmic horror. We are also enamoured by in punk, unconventional narratives, political commentary, hyperrealities, fantastika, futurism, and everything in between. Try us.

Who can join?

Meridian Australis welcomes submissions from authors of colour, Indigenous authors, authors who identify as LGBTQIA+, authors from disadvantaged backgrounds and/or disabled authors.

How do I apply?

Our critique groups run in person either fortnightly or monthly. Each member submits a new or revised short story every second meeting for critique. Members are expected to provide critical feedback on all stories submitted at each meeting.

We also have a members-only Discord server where you can chat with other members within the organisation and stay up to date with everything Meridian Australis is doing, including events and publishing opportunities.
 
If you are still interested in joining a critique groups and the broader Meridian Australis community, submit a short (max 1,500 word) fiction piece (or a snippet of a larger piece) to info@meridianaustralis.au and answer the following questions in the body of the email:
  1. What do you like to read and write, and what are you reading at the moment?
  2. What are your goals as an author?
  3. What are you aiming to get out a critique group like Meridian Australis?
  4. How comfortable are you giving and receiving critical feedback on your work?

Please also let us know where you’re based, so that we can match you up with a nearby group. Our team will be in touch regarding your submission in a couple of weeks.
